|---|---|---|
| Publisher | Telecommunications Industry Association | Uptime Institute |
| Level terminology | Rated-1 through Rated-4 | Tier I through Tier IV |
| Stated focus | Broad data center infrastructure requirements, including site, architecture, telecommunications, power, mechanical systems, fire safety, physical security, and monitoring | Site infrastructure topology, redundant capacity components, distribution paths, and performance confirmation criteria |
| Assessment route | TIA certification program through TIA-licensed certification bodies | Uptime Institute Tier Certification program |
| Correct public wording | Use the exact rating and certification type shown in the authorized record | Use the exact Tier and certification type shown in the Uptime Institute record |
01
The number is not the requirement
The design boundary, systems assessed, evidence, exceptions, testing, operating conditions, and certification scope determine what a result means.
02
Use exact terminology
Rated levels and Tiers belong to different systems and should not be presented as interchangeable labels.
03
Verify the issuing record
Public claims should follow the exact classification, assessment type, scope, and authority shown in the authorized record.
Terminology
Do not call a TIA rating a Tier.
Equivalence
Do not state that Rated-3 equals Tier III or that Rated-4 equals Tier IV.
Certification
Do not imply that readiness consulting is certification.
Constructed facility
Do not use a design result as proof of the constructed facility unless the issuing record supports it.
Application availability
Do not imply application availability from a facility-topology classification.
